A hand-held spreading apparatus (10) comprising a medium receiving tank (14) and a spreading unit (16) to convey the medium within the receiving tank in at least one state. The spreading unit can comprise of a medium conveying element (26) and/or a medium spreading element (28), which can be formed from an elastically deformable material such as rubber. The apparatus also comprises a connecting unit (18) and a drive connection element (20) which couples with an output unit (24) of a portable machine tool (12) to drive the spreading unit. The medium receiving tank can comprise a filling opening (15) with a safeguarding element (90). The receiving tank can also take the form of a hopper. The drive connection element can be a positively locking coupling element. The portable machine tool could come in the form of a power tool, drill or garden device. The medium which is being spread could be comprised from fertiliser, seeds or chemicals. A system is also provided comprising the portable machine tool and the spreading apparatus.
