The invention relates to a method and a device for determining the water content of a medium, in particular of soils and likewise, wherein a measurement probe or sensor located in a medium is heated. A temporal change of the temperature is effected by way of the leading-away of the thermal energy through moisture in the environment of the measurement probe, and this change is used for determining the moisture content of the medium. An intermediate layer is arranged between the measurement probe and the surrounding medium, which is absorbent and is mechanically deformable for mechanically coupling the measurement probe to the surrounding medium, and for thermally decoupling the measurement probe and the surrounding medium, in a manner such that an exact humidity measurement is effected without the thermal influence of the largely undefined surrounding medium.
