Nucleic acid sequences and methods are provided for producing conjugated fat ty acids in host cells. Nucleic acid sequences are obtained from an algal sourc es which encode polyenoic fatty acid isomerase. The nucleic acid sequences can be used in expression constructs to direct the expression of the PFI sequences in host cells. Expression of PFI in transgenic host cells provides for the production of conjugated fatty acids in the host cell.
