The drum has cable wound layer for layer and arranged with exposed surfaces so that a preferably gaseous cooling medium such as air directly cools the cable and/or the winding body. A second winding layer can be introduced and the cooling medium can be artificially moved. The drum can be provided with cooling openings, cooling ribs, cooling conductors and cable conductors.
