A bird feeder comprises a tubular container 10 for bird food and a removable base engageable with projections 60 at a lower end of the container to retain it in place to form the bottom of the container. The base comprises an upper part 26 in the form of a plug insertable into the container and a lower part 12 on which the upper part can rotate. The lower part 12 is engageable with the upper part 26 and includes a locking mechanism 34 whereby the projections 60 can be locked into slots 22 in the upper part by rotation of the lower part relative to the upper part, between a first rotational position in which the projections can be disengaged from the slots and a second rotational position in which the projections are locked into the slots. The upper and lower parts of the base can be separated from one another with a relative rotation between said first position, in which the two parts are locked together and a third position in which they are disengaged. This configuration of the base allows simplified constr
