In order to determine the precise orientation and positioning of an endoscope in an electromagnetic field, the invention relates to an endoscope device which comprises a proximal insertion head and a shaft extending distally from said head and having a central axis with an elongate lumen extending longitudinally through the device. The endoscope device is characterised by a sensor rod having at least two sensor coils mutually spaced at a finite distance in the longitudinal direction, said coils being oriented relative to one another at a finite angle.
