An apparatus for monitoring structural health of a stock of columns, such as lighting columns. The apparatus comprises a microcontroller and a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device located on the columns to be monitored. The MEMS device is programmed to measure and record accelerations, angular velocities and magnetic field strengths in X, Y and Z axes. The apparatus also comprises a power source connection and a data transmitter to transmit the measured data to a central data hub and then to a remote server for analysis using bespoke software. The data transmitter may be wireless such as WiFi, RF, 3G or 4G transmitter. The apparatus may further comprise a global positioning component (GPS), an electrical surge protector, an anemometer and a real time clock. There may be a photo cell to detect daylight in the vicinity of the columns and to switch off on the electrical power to lighting units. The column may be a telecom mast, railway signal, pylon, street light or lamp post. The MEMS device may comprise
