The present invention relates to succinimide activated nitroxyl compounds and methods for the synthesis of such compounds. The present invention also relates to the use of a succinimide activated nitroxyl compound to produce a nitroxylated protein, such as a nitroxylated hemoprotein (eg, nitroxylated hemoglobin, nitroxylated myoglobin). Also, the nitroxylated protein is optionally conjugated to a polyalkylene oxide (PAO), such as polyethylene glycol (PEG). Polynitroxylated heme protein is useful as an oxygen therapy (OTA). The present invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions of nitroxylated proteins and methods for the use of nitroxylated proteins in the treatment of various conditions.
