The soil sampling machine has a rotating roller (3) with an outer periphery formed by a cylindrical wire brush (3A) which is electrically driven in contra-rotation to a second driven roller (2) of similar diameter having a smooth steel periphery (2A). A gap of 3 to 4 mm is provided between the rollers (2,3) and the roller speed ratio i.e. roller(2)/roller(3) is optimal at 65/1000 rpm. Samples entering at the hopper (4) are thereby loosened/mixed without alteration to their naturally occurring grading for discharge to the collecting tray (6). USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables high sample throughput with much reduced labour/attention in portable unit suitable for laboratories as a result of low noise. Permits course gradings e.g. stones to pass through separation and mixing process without degradation by crushing.
