An instrument for controlling bleeding comprises a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end； an inflatable balloon having a proximal end secured to said shaft and a distal end that is inverted and that is secured to the distal end of said shaft； and an actuator for selectively inflating said inflatable balloon. The instrument suitably further comprises barbs projecting from the distal end of said shaft, preferably along a longitudinal axis extending between the shaft's proximal and distal ends.
