A flying pest trap monitoring unit 100 for a flying pest trap 10 comprises a pest trap monitoring module 110 configured to detect a malfunction in a component of a flying pest trap 10, and a communication module 120 configured to transmit a message to a remote device 200, such as a mobile phone, when the pest trap monitoring module detects the failure. Also claimed is a method of monitoring the trap comprising detecting a failure and subsequently transmitting a warning to the remote device when the fault is detected. The trap may comprise lit tubes 11 which function as attracting elements, and an electrocution grid 11. The system may issue warnings by text message, SMS, or email, and detect voltage drops across failed elements.
