The device has a recording unit (1) for image-based recording of the number of animals (5) in a spacious area. A memory unit (2) is provided for storing the results of the count. A transmission unit (3) is provided for transmitting the results of the count to a human observer, and a control unit (4) is provided for controlling a controllable device. Multiple data mediums are attached with every animal. A recognition unit is provided for the recognition of the presence of a data medium and for recognition of data of a data medium. An independent claim is also included for a method for counting animals, particularly economically useful animals for transport.
