A reactor generates methane gas from freshly harvested farm plants. The reactor has a gas hood (1) with side sub-surface curtains extending into two troughs (5, 7). The troughs are separated from each other by a barrier (3) with an inclined crest (4). Each trough is open on one side to the ambient air and on the other to the reactor chamber under the hood (1). The first trough contains a percolated fluid (6) and the second trough contains water effluent (8). The plant residues are loaded into containers which are passed in succession via the first trough in which they are submerged and advance to the barrier. At the barrier the container is raised and transfers sideways over the barrier and is lowered into the water effluent and rinsed. The container is then advanced, raised and removed.
