A hair straightening or hair styling composition comprising: (i) about 0.1 to about 50 wt. % of at least one lactone or combinations thereof (ii) about 0.1 to about 20 wt. % of at least one organic or inorganic base (iii) optionally, about 0.1 to about 20 wt. % of at least one functional polymer (iv) optionally, about 0.1 to about 20 wt. % of at least one diol, polyol, sugar, or combinations thereof (v) optionally, about 0.1 to about 20 wt. % of at least one reducing agent and (vi) about 40 to about 95 wt. % of at least one carrier and wherein, the composition has a pH of about 5 to about 11. This application also provides a process for preparing the above-described hair styling or hair straightening composition and method of use thereof.
