A dental cleaning appliance such as an electric toothbrush with a nozzle 36 for delivering bursts of working fluid to the teeth of a user includes a fluid delivery system which is moveable relative to a handle as the appliance is moved along the teeth of the user. A sensor 250 such as a Hall effect sensor mounted in the handle detects movement of a magnet 252 connected to a support 240 which moves with the nozzle 36 and provides an output which varies with movement relative to the handle. A control circuit detects movement of the nozzle 36 entering an interproximal gap and actuates the delivery of working fluid, to dislodge matter therein, depending on the rate of change of output from the sensor. The fluid may be pumped from a refillable reservoir surrounding the stem into an accumulator which has a solenoid valve controlling the bursts fluid to the nozzle based upon the sensor output.
