PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absorbent article having gathers formed of a composite expansible part provided to its outer packaging material, excellent in the air permeability and softness of the composite expansible part and having cushioning properties different between both sides of the outer packaging material.
SOLUTION: The absorbent article is equipped with an absorbent body and the outer packaging material. The outer packaging material has an outer layer sheet 21b, an inner layer sheet 22 and a large number of elastic members 42, and the gathers are formed by the composite expansible part 4. The composite expansible part 4 is formed so that the outer layer sheet 21a and the inner layer sheet 22 are mutually joined by a large number of joining parts 41a dispersed in the expanding and contracting direction of the composite expansible part 4 and the direction crossing it at a right angle. The elastic members 42 are arranged so as not to pass the joining parts 41a and both end parts of them are fixed to the outer layer sheet 21b and the inner layer sheet 22. The outer layer sheet 21b and the inner layer sheet 22 form a large number of pleats 43a and 43b continuously extending over a large number of the elastic members 42 and the size of the pleats 43b of the outer layer sheet 21b are different from that of the pleats 43a of the inner layer sheet 22.
