The invention relates to a method for treating wood, in which method a hydrophobation agent is applied onto the surface of wood. An aqueous dispersion of fortified coniferous wood rosin or saponified coniferous wood rosin is used as the hydrophobation agent, and the coniferous wood rosin binds onto the surface of wood, forming on the surface of wood a coniferous wood rosin coating, by means of which the water-repellency of the surface of wood is improved and penetration of micro-organisms into the wood is mechanically inhibited. The invention also relates to a wood product having a thin coniferous wood rosin coating formed by fortified coniferous wood rosin or saponified coniferous wood rosin on its surface, which coating improves the water-repellency of the surface of wood and mechanically inhibits the penetration of micro-organisms into the wood. The invention also relates to the use of an aqueous dispersion of fortified coniferous wood rosin or saponified coniferous wood rosin for treating wood.
