The present invention relates to a dominant instability mode identification method and system for a power system. The method comprises: determining, by means of a wide-area measurement system, a connecting line where a disturbed system oscillation center is located; extracting dynamic characteristic information about the connecting line from measurement data; calculating a first component and a second component of a complex power variation of the sending end of the connecting line according to the dynamic characteristic information; calculating an identification parameter of the dominant instability mode according to the first component and the second component; and determining, based on the identification parameter, a dominant instability mode of a system when transient-state power-angle instability and transient-state voltage instability phenomena occur simultaneously.
