PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide steps for producing a virus or virus antigen in an animal protein free medium.SOLUTION: A method of cultivating cells comprises the steps of: providing the animal protein free medium comprising soy hydrolysate at a concentration of 0.05% (w/v) to 1% (w/v) and yeast hydrolysate at a concentration of 0.05% (w/v) to 0.3% (w/v)； growing the cells in the medium； passaging and sub-cultivating the cells grown in the medium while in contact with a non-animal-derived protease in order to obtain a confluent cell culture； infecting the cells with a virus； and incubating the infected cells to grow the virus, wherein the cells can be animal cells, such as insect cells, avian cells, and the like.【課題】動物性タンパク質非含有培地でウイルス又はウイルス抗原を生成する工程の提供。【解決手段】０．０５～１％（ｗ／ｖ）の濃度のダイズ加水分解物及び０．０５～０．３％（ｗ／ｖ）の濃度の酵母加水分解物を含む動物性タンパク質非含有培地を提供する工程；その細胞を培地中で増殖させる工程；非動物由来プロテアーゼと接触させながらその培地中で増殖させた細胞を継代および継代培養して、コンフルエントな細胞培養物を得る工程；細胞にウイルスを感染させる工程；ならびに感染させた細胞をインキュベートして、ウイルスを増殖させる工程。前記細胞が昆虫細胞、鳥類細胞等の動物細胞である培養方法。【選択図】なし
