The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method and a device for cultivating a medicinal plant having a useful root, such as licorice, such that the commercial value of the root can be increased, and the production efficiency can be improved. As a technical means for accomplishing the purpose, a cultivating device comprising a plurality of cultivating barrels (1) filled with earth and a supply tube (2) for supplying a nutrient solution, is used. Each cultivating barrel (1) comprises a body portion (11) and a circular upper end portion (12). The body portion (11) has a row (11C) of field ridge shaped portions (11A) bulging inward and extending in the upward/downward direction or a row (11C) of elliptical bulging portions elongated in the upward/downward direction. The row (11C) of field ridge shaped portions (11A) or elliptical bulging portions are arranged in the peripheral direction of the column (11C). The upper end portion (12) has two pairs of circulating holes (12A). Earth (16) fills the body portion (11) up to the upper end such that a part of the upper end portion (12) is left as an upper-end pore portion (15). Supply tubes (2) having diameters sufficiently smaller than those of respective pairs of circulating holes (12A) penetrate respective holes (12A) such that a nutrient solution drips from the supply holes (21) of the supply tube (2) into respective cultivating barrels (1).
