A method of stimulating the formation of cartilage in a tissue site in a mammal, comprising:! applying a chondrocyte or chondrocyte precursor to a tissue site; and! applying reduced pressure to a tissue site for a time sufficient to induce the formation of new cartilage in that tissue site. ! 2. The method according to claim 1, where the chondrocyte or precursor of the chondrocyte is in a biocompatible substrate, which is applied to a tissue site. ! 3. The method according to claim 1, where the tissue site has a cartilage defect. ! 4. The method according to claim 3, where the defect is congenital or is the result of arthritis, cancer or damage. ! 5. The method according to claim 1, where a reduced pressure is applied to a tissue site through a collector connected to a source of reduced pressure. ! 6. The method according to claim 5, where the collector is a biocompatible substrate that is applied to a tissue site. ! 7. The method according to claim 1, where the chondrocyte or precursor of the chondrocyte is a chondrocyte. ! 8. The method according to claim 1, where the chondrocyte or precursor of the chondrocyte is a mesenchymal stem cell. ! 9. The method according to claim 2, where the biocompatible substrate is bioabsorbable. ! 10. The method according to claim 2, where the biocompatible substrate contains polyhydroxy acid, poly (caprolactone), polycarbonate, polyamide, polyanhydride, polyamino acid, polyorthoester, polyacetal, degradable polycyanoacrylate or degradable polyurethane. ! 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the biocompatible substrate comprises a polylactide-co-glycolide (PLAGA) polymer or a polyethylene glycol-PLAGA copolymer. ! 12. The method according to claim 1, further comprising applying a cytokine to a tissue site. ! 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the cytokine is biocompatible1.
