The present invention provides a practical method for obtaining carbohydrates from nopal mucilage. This process is applied to any variety of Opuntia not after 45 days of the nopal cut. The obtention of the carbohydrates includes the hydrolysis of the nopal mucilage and the use of sulfuric acid at 2% under conditions of 121°C and 1 atm of pressure. The highest yield of mucilage is obtained when it is previously dried at 60°C for 5 days in a square of approximately 15 mm2 and then milled in a blade mill.La invención provee un método práctico para la obtención de carbohidratos a partir del mucílago de nopal. Este proceso es aplicable para cualquier variedad de Opuntia no mayor a 45 días de corte de los nopales. La obtención de los carbohidratos implica la hidrólisis del mucílago de nopal y el uso de ácido sulfúrico al 2 % bajo condiciones de 121 °C y 1 atm de presión. El mayor rendimiento del mucílago se obtiene cuando es previamente secado a 60 °C durante 5 días en cuadrado de aproximadamente 15 mm2 y posteriormente son molidos en un molino de aspas.
