A system for producing steam for use in a hydrocarbon recovery process, includes a fluidized bed heat exchanger that includes a heat exchanger tube including an inlet for receiving pressurized feed water including contaminants, an outlet for outputting a fluid stream comprising the feed water after passage through the heat exchanger tube, and particles between the inlet and the outlet to produce a fluidized bed within the heat exchanger tube when the pressurized feed water flows through the heat exchanger tube. The fluidized bed heat exchanger also includes an outer shell configured to receive a heat transfer medium therein for heating the feed water as the feed water flows through the heat exchanger tube. The system also includes a separator in fluid communication with the heat exchanger tube for separating the fluid stream into a liquid water stream and a steam stream for use in hydrocarbon recovery.
