PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic matter decomposition material which can sufficiently decompose organic matter and also can reduce the production of sludge mainly composed of of ferric hydroxide, and to provide a method for decomposing an organic matter-containing material to be decomppsed by using the decomposition material. SOLUTION: This organic matter decomposition material contains: the powder of at least either iron oxide selected from ferrous oxide and triiron tetroxide (particularly, ferrous oxide); and adsorbent (such as active carbon). This decomposition method is characterized in that the material to be decomposed (particularly, water base) containing the organic matter (such as trichloroethylene), the organic matter decomposition material and hydrogen peroxide are made in contact with each other.
