PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absorbent article on a surface sheet of which body fluid is hardly retained for a long time and which hardly gets twisted or wrinkled.SOLUTION: The surface sheet 2 comprises a single layer having a number of protrusions 21 which are raised so that they may have tops 21a on its surface 2a opposed to the skin of the surface sheet 2 and a number of concaves 20 surrounding the protrusions 21. The distance between fibers in the surface sheet 2 in the direction of its thickness is shorter on the side of an absorber 4 than on the side of its tops 21a and that in its surface direction is shorter on the side of the concaves 20 than on the side of the tops 21a. When the absorber 4 is divided into a skin side region 45, a central region 46 and non skin side region 47 in the direction of its thickness, the abundance ratio of water absorbing polymer 43 is higher in the central region 46 than in the skin side region 45. The thickness of the skin side region 45 is 0.1-0.8 mm and its density is 10-110 kg/m3.
