The invention relates to a cosmetic composition for cleaning the body or for conditioning hair comprising one or more hydrophobically modified celluloses having a hydrophobic group content of greater than 0.6% by weight, relative to the total weight of the hydrophobically modified cellulose, and one or more anionic surfactants containing a carboxylate group (s), said hydrophobically modified cellulose or celluloses comprising a main chain constituted by a nonionic cellulose ether on which is attached one or more hydrophobic groups chosen from: 1) the 3-alkoxy-2-hydroxy (C 1 -C 6) alkyl groups in which the alkoxy moiety is branched or linear and has 5 to 30 carbon atoms, 2) C 1 -C 6 alkyl groups, and C 1 -C 3 aryl, arylalkyl and alkylaryl and mixtures thereof, said hydrophobically modified cellulose or celluloses having no non-alkoxylated C-alkyl group.
