The present invention relates to a pre-filled injection pen for dispensing a plurality of set volumes of a solution containing a preservative. The injection pen includes a housing structure that permanently and non-removably secures the cartridge containing the preservative-containing solution. The cartridge is connected to a needle cannula further having a sharp distal tip for penetrating the user's skin. The distal tip of the needle cannula is obscured by an axially movable needle shield, at least between injections. A cleaning chamber is provided at the distal end of the axially movable needle shield, the cleaning chamber containing the same volume of preservative-containing solution as is present in the cartridge. The washing chamber is further provided with an outlet which is open to the environment, through which air and an aliquot of the preservative-containing liquid can escape. Proximity to the outlet is provided means for collecting the escaped amount of preservative-containing solution.
