A computer-assisted surgery system forplanning/guiding alterations to a bone in surgery,comprises a trackable member secured to the bone, usinginertial sensor units for facilitating manipulations.The trackable member has a first inertial sensor unitproducing orientation-based data. A positioning block issecured to the bone, with an orientation of thepositioning block being adjustable once the positioningblock is secured to the bone to guide tools in alteringthe bone. The positioning block has a second inertialsensor unit producing orientation-based data for thepositioning block. A processing system providing anorientation reference associating the bone to thetrackable member comprises a signal interpreter fordetermining an orientation of the trackable member and ofthe positioning block from the orientation-based data. Aparameter calculator calculates alteration parametersrelated to the orientation of the positioning block withrespect to the bone as a function of the orientationreference.
