The invention relates to method for forming a coffee article for preparing a coffee beverage, the method comprising: providing a liquid coffee-extract; foaming and cooling the liquid coffee-extract to obtain a shape-retaining coffee-extract mousse, and shaping and freeze-drying the mousse to obtain a coffee article. The liquid coffee extract may comprise finely ground roasted coffee in an amount of from 1-50% by weight of the total coffee solids. The liquid coffee extract may be simultaneously cooled and foam. Also disclosed is a coffee article containing finely ground roasted coffee having mass of from 0.3-5g and a density of at most 0.9gcm3.
