A herbal composition (I) comprises herbs (or their extracts) for: (a) promoting blood flow and reducing coagulated blood levels; (b) calming; (c) sedation; and (d) flow of 'Qi'; where (a) is one of 15 specific herbs (e.g. Salvia multiorhiza), (b) is one of 9 specific herbs (e.g. Lilium brownii), (c) is one of 4 specific herbs (e.g. Rehmannia glutinosa) and (d) is one of 20 specific herbs (e.g. Citrus cinensis). In a force swimming test for antidepressant activity in mice, the immobility time for mice treated orally with 6000 mg/kg of a 1:1:1:1 mixture of dried aqueous extracts of Salvia multiorhiza, Lilium brownii, Rehmannia glutinosa and Citrus cinensis was 114 seconds, compared with 104 seconds for mice treated orally with 10 mg/kg of imipramine and 180 seconds for vehicle-only controls. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given in the source material.
