The device has an inhaled gas source i.e. respirator (15), and a guiding unit that guides inhaled gas for breath paths (5, 9) of a patient. A sensor unit determines chest compression. A control unit triggers an inhaled gas stroke if the sensor unit detects the chest compression. The control unit releases the inhaled gas stroke in a time-controlled manner. The sensor unit is implemented as a sensor, which detects mechanical pressure signals within an area of a thorax of the patient and leads over a control line to the inhaled gas source. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an inhaled gas source during cardiac massage of a patient.
