A square baler is disclosed which comprises a baling chamber, a plunger (16) reciprocable at one end of the baling chamber, a pre-compression chamber (18) within which charges of crop are amassed and pre-compressed by a rotor (32) prior to transfer into the baling chamber, and a pickup roller (30) having radially projecting tines for picking up crop from the ground and advancing the crop to the rotor. In the invention, a torque sensor (34) is connected to at least one tine bar of the pickup roller to produce an electrical output signal indicative of the torque experienced by the tine bar, and a processing circuit (46) is operative to estimate the rate of crop flow into the pre- compression chamber by analysing the electrical output of the torque sensor only at times when the position of the tines lies within a predetermined angular position of the pickup roller.L'invention porte sur une botteleuse carrée, laquelle botteleuse comprend une chambre de bottelage, un plongeur (16) pouvant effectuer un va-et-vient à une extrémité de la chambre de bottelage, une chambre de pré-compression (18) à l'intérieur de laquelle des charges de produit de culture sont amassées et pré-comprimées par un rotor (32) avant un transfert dans la chambre de bottelage, et un rouleau de saisie (30) ayant des fourchons saillant radialement pour saisir un produit de culture à partir du sol et faire avancer le produit de culture jusqu'au rotor. Selon l'invention, un capteur de couple (34) est relié à au moins une barre de fourchon du rouleau de saisie afin de produire un signal de sortie électrique indicatif du couple subi par la barre de fourchon, et un circuit de traitement (46) fonctionne de façon à estimer le débit d'écoulement de produit de culture dans la chambre de pré-compression par analyse de la sortie électrique du capteur de couple uniquement à des moments où la position des fourchons se trouve à l'intérieur d'une position angulaire prédéterminée du rouleau de saisie.
