The invention relates to medical technology and can be used as a therapeutic and prophylactic support for preventing dislocation of the vertebrae and deformation of the spinal column by reducing the load on the spine and buttocks during sitting. The technical result is an enhanced therapeutic and prophylactic effect. The method for extending and relieving the spine, which involves traction of the spine, consists in applying a traction effect to the spine in the sitting position by immobilizing the thoracolumbar portion of the patients torso in a brace which has at least one supporting member with a point of support below the ischium, enabling the body to be suspended by its own weight above the surface of a seat. The device comprises a brace with fastening members, to which brace at least one supporting member is attached which has a point of support below the ischium, the length of the supporting member being chosen in order to enable the patients body to be suspended in a sitting position above a seat. The brace is designed in the form of a length-adjustable thoracolumbar corset, or in the form of a rigid panel with thoracolumbar straps. The supporting member is provided with a supporting platform and is resilient. The device can comprise at least two supporting members, wherein at least one supporting member is shaped, having a contour which corresponds to the outer contour of the lower portion of the torso.
