PURPOSE: A Foeniculum vulgare Miller seed extract is provided to reduce bone loss, to improve mechanical strength of bone without cytotoxicity, and to be used as a pharmaceutical product and a health food for preventing or treating osteoporosis. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating osteoporosis contains a Foeniculum vulgare Miller seed extract as an active ingredient. The extract is prepared from Foeniculum vulgare Miller seeds using water, C1-C4 alcohol, or a mixture thereof. C1-C4 alcohol is selected among methanol or ethanol. A food composition for preventing or treating osteoporosis contains the extract as an active ingredient.본 발명은 소회향 종자 추출물을 유효성분으로 함유하는 골다공증의 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 소회향 종자 추출물은 세포 독성이 없으며, 마우스 골수-유래 대식세포에서 RANKL-유도된 파골세포 분화를 저해하고, 파골세포 분화의 초기 단계에 작용하며, 성숙 파골세포에서 흡수공 면적을 현저히 감소시키고, 난소를 적출한 동물 모델에서 난소 적출에 의해 유도된 골 손실을 감소시키며 골의 기계적 강도를 향상시킨다. 따라서, 본 발명에 따른 소회향 종자 추출물은 골다공증의 예방 또는 치료에 유용한 의약품 및 건강식품으로 사용될 수 있다.
