A device is described which, when attached to the mouth of an extrusion machine, causes the extruded material to emerge from the machine with a flat velocity profile, seen perpendicular to the direction of travel. The device consists of a shoulder with a surface area of approx. 35% of the cross-sectional area of the extrusion opening. The plane of the shoulder may be perpendicular to the axis of the extruder or chamfered, either on the extruder side or the output side. The inner converging surface of the extruder may contain a number of such shoulder in series. Device is suitable for use in the prodn. of square section bars of yeast. By constructing the converging mouth of the extruder out of a series of shoulders, the need to provide a surface lubricant is eliminated.
