Topical formulations comprising: from about 0.001 to about 3 wt% detomidine or a salt thereof； And a carrier suitable for topical administration to the skin of a subject, the carrier optionally comprising a water miscible solubilizer present in an amount of up to 40% by weight of the formulation； A formulation is disclosed herein wherein the formulation has a pH of 4.5 to 9, wherein the formulation provides for sustained, substantially non-systemic treatment for pain.
