The staple cartridge assembly includes a compressible appendage that is positionable relative to a cartridge deck. The compressible appendage includes a plurality of unchanged fibers and a plurality of changed fibers that have been melted and resolidified. The unaltered fibers include a first fiber that includes a first fiber portion and a second fiber that includes a second fiber portion that extends over the first fiber portion.
