PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drug recognition apparatus and method capable of accurately recognizing the kind of drug with characters inscribed thereon.SOLUTION: An illumination unit capable of illuminating drug with characters inscribed thereon from a plurality of illumination directions surrounding the drug, sequentially switches the illumination direction from which the drug is illuminated. An imaging unit repeatedly captures an image of the drug, each time the illumination direction of the illumination unit switches. A feature image extraction unit analyses the captured image for each illumination direction obtained by the imaging unit and extracts a feature image corresponding to the shape of the inscribed characters, for each captured image. A feature image integration unit integrates the feature image for each illumination direction extracted by the feature image extraction unit, and generates an integrated image.
