The present invention relates to a skin whitening cosmetic composition including an extract of roots of Coix lachryma-jobi var. mayuen or a solvent fraction thereof, a skin whitening food composition, a health functional food for preventing or relieving a pigmentation disease including the composition, and a pharmaceutical composition for treating a pigmentation disease. The composition including an extract of roots of Coix lachryma-jobi var. mayuen or a solvent fraction thereof does not stimulate the skin, has low cytotoxicity while inhibiting generation of melanin, controls tyrosinase activity to be used as a skin whitening functional cosmetic, and a health functional food preventing or relieving a skin pigmentation disease or an agent of a skin pigmentation disease.본 발명은 율무뿌리 추출물 또는 이의 용매 분획물을 포함하는 미백용 화장료 조성물, 미백용 식품 조성물, 상기 조성물을 포함하는 색소 침착 질환의 예방 또는 완화용 건강기능성 식품, 및 색소 침착 질환의 예방 또는 치료용 약제학적 조성물에 관한 것이다.본 발명의 율무뿌리 추출물 또는 이의 용매 분획물을 포함하는 조성물은 피부 자극이 없고 세포독성이 낮은 장점을 보유하면서도 멜라닌의 생성을 저해시키고, 티로시나아제 활성을 억제할 수 있으므로, 피부미백을 위한 기능성 화장품, 피부 색소 침착 질환을 예방 또는 완화할 수 있는 건강기능성 식품 또는 피부 색소침착 질환의 치료제로서 유용히 사용할 수 있다.
