The present invention relates to novel furano- and pyranoflavanoids. The present invention also relates to process for preparation of said flavanoids and their use for the treatment of diabeties.The present invention also relates to hypoglycaemic activity of 3-hydroxy-1-(4-methoxy benzofuran-5-yl)-3-phenyl-propenone and related compounds isolated from Indian medicinal plant of leguminosae family. Particularly this invention relates to hypoglycaemic activity of 3-hydroxy-1-(4-methoxy benzofuran-5-yl)-3-phenyl propenone isolated from plant source of leguminosae family such as Pongamia pinnata Pierre, having the formula 1, shown below. The present invention also includes the synthesis and antidiabetic activity of novel furano- and pyranoflavonoid compounds having the general formula 1, shown in the drawing accompanying the specification[IN-DEL-2006-00528A]
