The use of dianhydrogalactitol provides a novel therapeutic modality for treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and ovarian cancer. Dianhydrogalactitol acts as an alkylating agent for DNA that creates N7 methylation. Dianhydrogalactitol is effective in inhibiting the growth of cancer stem cells and is effective against tumors that are refractory to temozolomide, cisplatin and thymidine kinase inhibitors. This drug acts independently of the MGMT repair mechanism.
