1. A nanoparticle containing a polymer, a chelating metal, a magnetic metal oxide, and at least one active agent covalently bonded to said polymer. The nanoparticle of claim 1, wherein said metal chelating polymer is gelatin, polymethyleneimine, chitosan or polylysine. The nanoparticle of claim 1, wherein said magnetic metal oxide is iron oxide or ferrite derived from iron oxide. The nanoparticle according to claim 3, wherein said iron oxide is magnetite, oxymagnetite, or a mixture thereof. The nanoparticle according to claim 1, wherein said at least one active agent is a fluorescent dye, a contrast agent, a peptide or peptidomimetic, a polypeptide, an anti-folate drug, an antibiotic, an anti-inflammatory agent, an anthracycline chemotherapeutic agent, or any combination thereof. The nanoparticle of claim 5, wherein said fluorescent dye is rhodamine or fluorescein. The nanoparticle of claim 5, wherein said peptide or peptidomimetic is cyclic RGD (cRGD) or acyclic RGD. The nanoparticle of claim 5, wherein said polypeptide is a related TNF ligand that induces apoptosis (TRAIL), or interleukin-12 (IL-12). The nanoparticle of claim 5, wherein said antifolate drug is metatrexate. The nanoparticle according to claim 5, where the specified chemotherapeutic agent of the anthracycline series is doxorubicin.
