A stabilized multiphase composition comprising a first phase, a second phase, water-soluble nonionic cellulose ether and nanocrystalline cellulose, where nanocrystalline cellulose has a length to diameter ratio of from about 20 to about 200, and the diameter of the nanocrystalline cellulose is less than about 60 nm .2. A stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 1, wherein the first phase comprises water. A stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 1, wherein the second phase is selected from the group comprising gas, particles suspended in water, water-insoluble organic liquids, and combinations thereof. The stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 2, wherein the second phase comprises oil. The stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 4, wherein the multiphase composition does not contain a surfactant. The stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 4, further comprising a surfactant. The stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 4, wherein the multiphase composition contains from about 0.1% to about 20% of an alkyl cellulose ether. The stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 7, wherein the multiphase composition contains from about 0.3% to about 1% nanocrystalline cellulose. The stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 4, wherein the cellulose ether is selected from the group consisting of methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, cetyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose. The stabilized multiphase composition according to claim 4, wherein the multiphase composition contains from about 1% to about 30% oil.1.
