The present invention relates to an enzyme that is capable of cleaving hyaluronic acid and that is produced by mushrooms of the Fistulina species (especially Fistulina hepatica mushroom). The degradation takes place through lyase mechanism characterized by the formation of double bonds between C4 and C5 of glucuronic acid. There is also disclosed a process for preparing and purification of the above-described enzyme as well as possible practical use thereof for the preparation of a low-molecular hyaluronate or cosmetic or pharmaceutical compositions. The present invention also relates to a process for preparing a low-molecular hyaluronate.
