Disclosed are topical gel compositions which comprise 0.05 – 0.2 % (w/w) methylparaben, a second preservative selected from quaternary ammonium compounds, alcoholic agents, antibacterial esters, anti-microbial agents, sodium benzoate, phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea;, 0.80 to 1.50% (w/w) carbomer, 9 to 13% (w/w) total polyol where the composition has a pH of 4.5 to 7.5 and when the concentration of methylparaben is greater than 0.15% (w/w), the concentration of carbomer is less than 1.25% (w/w). The compositions are substantially free of methylparaben crystalline particles after an extended period of storage. The composition may further comprise an alpha adrenergic receptor agonist, which may also be brimonidine. The polyol may be propylene glycol. The disclosure also relates to methods of treating a skin disorder, such as rosacea, erythema of rosacea, telangiectasias, psoriasis, purpura, erythema of acne, eczema, non-rosacea-related inflammations of skin, flushing, skin sagging, creasing and/or wrinkling.
