A topical gel composition comprising: from 0.05 to 0.20% (by mass fraction) of methyl paraben； one or more additional preservatives； from 0.80 to 1.50% (by mass fraction) of carbomer； from 9 , 0 to 13.0% (by mass fraction) of the total content of polyhydric alcohols； where the pH of the gel composition for topical application is in the range from 4.5 to 7.5, and even with a methyl paraben concentration of more than 0.15% (by mass fraction) ) carbomer concentration is less than 1.25% (by mass fraction) .2. A topical gel composition according to claim 1, wherein the total polyhydric alcohol content comprises from about 4.5% to 6.5% (mass fraction) of the first polyhydric alcohol. A topical gel composition according to claim 1, wherein the gel composition further comprises an alpha adrenergic receptor agonist. A topical gel composition according to claim 3, wherein the alpha adrenergic receptor agonist is an alpha 1 or alpha 2 adrenergic receptor agonist. The topical gel composition of claim 4, wherein the alpha adrenergic receptor agonist is selected from the group consisting of oxymetazoline, phenylephrine, methoxyamine, brimonidine, tetrahydrozoline, naphazoline, xylometazoline, epinephrine and norepinephrine. 6.
