Non-cohesive underground formations containing clay type components are consolidated by (a) contacting the ground formation with a cationic surfactant, which is absorbed by the clay type component of the formation in an amount sufficient to inhibit the absorption of a polymerisation catalyst injected afterwards, (b) contacting the ground formation with a curable, resin-forming material, and with a polymerisation catalyst for curing the resin-forming material, this catalyst being absorbable by the clay type components fo the formation, and (c) allowing the resin-forming material to cure, so that a consolidated mass of ground particles is produced The cationic surfactant is pref. dissolved in a nonaqueous solvent and is pref. a quaternary ammonium salt, pref. a mixture of 40% n-dodecyldimethylbenzyl-ammonium chloride, 50% n-tetradecyldimethylbenzyl-ammonium chloride and 10% n-hexacyclolmethylbenzy-lammonium chloride.
