Perforin 2 (P2) is expressed by fibroblasts, microglia, and macrophages, see, eg, Mycobacterium smegmatis, M. et al. It has been discovered that it is important for killing bacteria such as Avium, Salmonella, MRSA (drug resistant staphylococci), E. coli. Compounds identified by the screening assay are selected based on the effect of these compounds on P2. Also provided is the use of these compounds in the treatment of infectious diseases, particularly those caused by bacteria and antibiotic resistant bacteria.
