A new class of antibiotics effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is disclosed. This class of compounds can impair cell wall biosynthesis by binding to both the allosteric and catalytic domains of penicillin binding protein (PBP) 2a. This class of antibiotics can be expected to reverse the obsolescence of staphylococcal PBP as an important target for antibiotics. Embodiments of the present invention therefore provide novel antibacterial compounds that target penicillin binding proteins and / or other important intracellular targets. Also provided are methods for inhibiting bacterial growth and / or replication using the compounds described herein. Various embodiments are active against gram positive bacteria, including drug resistant strains of S. aureus.
