PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions for topical administration to human or animal eyes for treating conditions accompanying natural tear deficiency.SOLUTION: The invention provides an aqueous composition suitable for topical administration to the human or animal eye, comprising at least one water-soluble polymeric ophthalmic lubricant, such as hyaluronate, carbomer gel or hypromellose, together with a water-soluble analgesic. The analgesic may be tramadol having an affinity for 5-HT receptors. The aqueous composition may, for example, be used as an artificial tear, and as a general ophthalmic lubricant for treating conditions such as dry eye or blepharitis.
